Getting Real: The Ups and Downs of Working Full-time from Home (With a Baby and a Puppy)

Before I really begin, I’ll add in a disclaimer. I know I’m a bit crazy. Really. I fully admit that getting a puppy while raising an infant and working a full-time job is outrageous. No excuses, no justifications. However. I love my life. Even in the moments where I’m broken down, wondering how I’m going to do it all, how I’m going to keep my sanity intact — I know how good I have it. I’m so very, very blessed. So I thought I’d share a bit of how the days flow (and stumble) and some of my biggest reflections in all this chaos. ### 6 am – Puppy whining...

Lessons from Anthony: Check Your Expectations

In Rising Strong, Brene Brown shares how our expectations can set us up for disappointment when the reality turns out to be different from our (sometimes lofty or idealistic) expectations. This really hit home. Perhaps it’s the novelist in me. I frequently paint elaborate and dramatic visions of plans, of what I can accomplish in a day, of what a vacation or day trip should look like. This has hit hardest with having a child. The saturation of parenting/birthing books, articles, blogs, newsfeed, Tweets and Instas create a visualization with glowing edges and sometimes beams streaming from the heavens. Oh, baby’s first ____ will be just amazing and picturesque like...

Thankful Thursdays: Summer Roses and Novel Ideas

flower aug2014

Note: I’m realizing Thankful Thursdays aren’t always happening on Thursdays, but better late than never. 🙂  There’s always so many things to be thankful for. A few of the gifts I’ve experienced in the past few weeks include: 1. Chances to take photos: Taking a moment or two to slip away with my DSLR clears my head and awakens my soul. Especially with beautiful roses at hand: 2. Exciting awards: The first three chapters of my novel won a Cascade Writing Award from the Oregon Christian Writers – I’m so honored and grateful for the affirmation. 🙂 3. Riding Grunnion again: Though it’s been four weeks, I got back in the...

Thankful Thursday: Eggs, Healed Ankles, Quiet Nights

2014-07-31 14.51.13-2

Each week seems to bring new adventures and gifts to revel in! Here are some of the many things I’m thankful for this week… Egg-citing surprises: We knew our chickens were hiding eggs… We just didn’t realize where or how many! Now I think I’ve got their spots figured out and we’ve been collecting 4-6 a day! The rest of the hens are still maturing and should pitch in soon too. Health and healing: My not-so-graceful dismount from my horse left me with quite the limp the past few weeks, but the ankle has healed a lot these past few days (and a visit to my trusty chiropractor helped as...

Thankful Thursday: Of Sick Chickens and Endless Bird Net

eggs1

Another week gone by… I’m thankful that I can post this on a Friday and still call it a Thankful Thursday post. Because, why not? 🙂 Seriously, did Thursday disappear for anyone else this week? Sick chicken – Poor Bossy came down with the sniffles and an odd breathing issue earlier this week. It was a wake-up call to make sure I had the first aid medicines, antibiotics, de-wormers and everything else I might need in a chicken first-aid kit. After separating her from the flock for a few days and giving her wormer and antibiotics, she seems better, though sneezing occasionally. She was let back to join the flock today and...
