Overcoming my “quiet time” misconceptions

For months now, I’ve been longing for a day where I could break away, invade a little coffee shop, write, journal and pray. Ideal quiet time to listen to God and understand what He wants from me. For months now, it hasn’t happened. Quite frankly, I don’t know if it will ever happen. I don’t even like coffee. But that idea, that image in my mind, kept me from even attempting a quiet time/journaling session. The idea that it had to be one way and perfect kept me at arms length of what I really wanted and really needed – a moment to talk or type through what I want...

What I learned while scanning 50 years of photographs

This past weekend, the family and friends gathered to celebrate my grandparent’s 50-year wedding anniversary. I took the entire album of my grandparent’s photos and scanned them all for a slideshow video that told the story of their life. Through this long process, I learned a little about love, life and a whole lot about family. 1. Preserve your pictures – preserve your memories. I love photos and am used to the digital age that we live in. My grandparent’s photos were in old albums in that magnetic sheeting that turns photos brown and eats them away. It is the one story that I just can’t let go. Mystery, intrigue, murder, Nazi invasions, beautiful Arabian horses – it is everything I love all wrapped up into one. But in the course of my rewrite, I decided the name of my male character was a bit too modern. So I changed it to a more time-appropriate name. But that name didnt fit this character that I’ve known (and abandoned) over the years. It...

NaNoWriMo 2011 Progress Report

I’m happy to report that I’d give myself around a B or B- for this year’s National Novel Writing Month – a challenge where one must complete 50,000 words in 30 days. The idea is to keep a pace of 1,667 words a day, but I have certainly lagged behind on some days and then compensated on other days. It is glorious to begin a new project. There are so many unknowns and roads you end up on that you’d never expect. Anyone else doing NaNoWriMo? How is it going for you?
