Thankful Thursday: Of Sick Chickens and Endless Bird Net

Another week gone by… I’m thankful that I can post this on a Friday and still call it a Thankful Thursday post. Because, why not? ๐Ÿ™‚ Seriously, did Thursday disappear for anyone else this week? Sick chickenย – Poor Bossy came down with the sniffles and an odd breathing issue earlier this week. It was a wake-up call to make sure I had the first aid medicines, antibiotics, de-wormers and everything else I might need in a chicken first-aid kit. After separating her from the flock for a few days and giving her wormer and antibiotics, she seems better, though sneezing occasionally. She was let back to join the flock today and...

Miller Homestead Update 2 – New Chicks on the Block

Yes, we expanded the flock even more! Meet Bug:   and Pepper:   and Lola, the Showgirl: They are a year and a half old and were re-homed due to their previous owner moving into an apartment. We are more than happy to welcome the bunch of Bantams (small-breed chickens.) For now, they’re separated from the rest of the flock but eventually will all be one big happy family. Ideally.   On the rest of the homestead…. EGGS! Foghorn Leghorn was the first to surprise us with eggs – and they’re beautiful! Icarus has also started laying. ๐Ÿ™‚   Garden: Peppers. Lots of peppers.   And then, of course, the...

The Miller Homestead Update

Time for an overall report of the homestead! Chickens: In chicken news, we for sure have two roosters now: Hawkeye and Penguin. We love them both dearly but may be re-homing Penguin as he’s the less friendly of the two and rather large for our medium to small hens. We know of a nice, small farm where he will be well loved. ๐Ÿ™‚ The layers are all growing well and remaining as plucky and adventurous as ever. So adventurous, we had to string up some bird netting over the 4-foot fence that they like to hop over. Thankfully, we don’t have neighbors on either side of our property, otherwise they...

#ThankfulThursday: Of Bucking Horses, Adventurous Chickens

Lately, my coworkers have inspired me more and more, especially this 100 Happy Days Challenge – and it reminded me of the weekly Thankful Thursday posts that were always the highlight of my week. So it’s time to bring them back. ๐Ÿ™‚ Today it seems extra fitting, as I’m thankful for so many things and also for a few diamond-in-the-rough events… Working from home – This has been a career goal for me, and I’m so incredibly blessed to have that chance as the Community Champion for Buffer. I am surrounded by an incredible team and part of a community unlike any other I’ve known.ย  Adventurous chickens – Owning 13...

Oh Deer. (And the birds were not happy)

Having grown up on a private, gravel-driveway hill in the middle of a small town, I’m no stranger to seeing deer walking around the house. In fact, it was a regular occurrence to see a doe and her babies hanging out in my horse’s pasture. But in the six years I’ve lived in the city limits, I’ve never once seen a deer within the vicinity. Until today. A buck and doe startled me, and the birds, in the back yard. I only happened upon them because four rogue chickens had snuck into the front yard (which is not a part of their domain) and I was shooing them back into...
