thankful thursday: week seven

What a wild week. Blame Valentines Day for the Thankful Thursday post being on Friday. I hope you’re not too OCD to bear with me. Did Valentines Day brighten your week? If so, ignore my grinch-like ramblings. But make an effort to have those sorts of days more often. Here are some of the gifts from this week: 36. the inspiration and motivation to change my diet (I’ll blog more about this later.) 37. seeing my first ad design in a national publication (Writers Digest):     38. husband surprising me with flowers on Valentines Day (despite my protests) 39. helping family out 40. tax returns. (’nuff said!) How...

confessions: the anti-valentines day post

I posted this two years ago and it holds true today.  It’s not like I’m against Valentine’s Day. People get all happy and the pink and red come out in force. It’s hard not to catch a little of the giddiness. But I’ve always believed there should be so much more to it. Not just one day, but every day should have the same joy and love. Make every day special. At least, turn Valentine’s Day on your head and do something to commemorate it as Generosity Day. I love this idea. But for goodness sake — if you do something noble, don’t turn around and post it on Facebook or Twitter...

confessions: when everything seems broken

You know those people who just seem to have everything in their life together and working? Yea. I’m not one of those people. In fact, most everything I touch seems to break. I’ve blown two motors in two different vehicles and it seems I end up with the electronics, appliances and even internet routers with the weirdest quirks. And I’m not making this up. It’s a little too painful to go into more detail, however. Have you ever had days where it seemed like all the duct tape in the world couldn’t patch up the mess? I’m totally there. But thankfully, there are amazing friends in my life who tirelessly...

confessions: true love is…

Need I really say more? Valentine’s day, Shmalentine’s day. I hate the commercialization of this as much as I hate that people only ever “give thanks” during November. Show your significant other how much you love them year round — and go beyond words. Be there. Go the extra mile. (Of course, you know we’re soul mates when I pony up and admit that I have just as much fun watching them as he does.)  Share in the comments: What do you do to surprise your husband/wife/friends how much you appreciate them?

book review: Courting Cate

Book Description: When Amish farmer Pete Treger moves to Paradise Township, Pennsylvania, seeking a better life, he meets sisters Cate and Betsy Miller. Both are beautiful, but older sister Cate is known more for her sharp tongue and fiery temper than her striking appearance. Betsy, on the other hand, is sweet and flirty–and seems to have attracted most of the bachelors in Lancaster County! However, the sisters’ wealthy father has made one hard and fast rule: elder sister must marry first, before the younger can even start courting. Unfortunately for poor Betsy, and for the men who want to court her, her older sister, Cate, doesn’t have any suitors–until Pete...
