confessions: book-consumption habits

In meeting with an author friend of mine, we discussed some ways to reach new readers, which led to a discussion about how books are purchased/consumed nowadays. Here are my habits: – I buy and read just as many paperbacks as I did before I owned a Kindle. – I make more impromptu purchases on my Kindle if I receive a good recommendation. – If a used book is the same price as the Kindle version, I buy the physical book (thank you, Prime Membership.) – I spend much less time strolling through bookstores (and I lament this), but I “stroll” through Amazon regularly. – I download and listen to...

thankful thursday: week six

What a crazy, crazy year 2013 has been. I dare say I look forward to what the other eleven months hold. This week, I’m so thankful for: 36. the overwhelming support from family, friends and even near-strangers as I launched Miller Media Solutions 37. a client pleased with my design 38. Super Bowl commercials that are so. well. done. 39. a husband who catches my mistakes on my website(s) 40. the random story inspiration and start of a new novel I’d love to hear how your week is going. Please share a couple gifts that you see in your world.   Much love, the former rodeo queen

confessions: playing in the big leagues

In November, I was asked to speak at the April 5th Faith & Culture Writers Conference, which I had attended the inaugural event back in 2011 and adored it. I couldn’t say “yes” fast enough! Today, the official website and lineup of speakers was unveiled—and seeing my name amongst these incredible writers and industry professionals terrifies and thrills me. If’you’d suggested five years ago that I’d be teaching social media and marketing to writers, I would have laughed in your face. But I’ve come to discover that teaching and coaching is one the things I enjoy most about writer’s conferences. These experiences also led me to create Miller Media Solutions, which addresses...

confessions: how a cluster of like-minded people can recharge and refocus you

Last night I attended a local meeting that happens once a month here in the Portland/Vancouver area — this chapter of a national organization brings together fiction authors and while some might consider it networking and personal development, I really see it as therapy. These folks truly understand what it means to talk to the imaginary characters in your head. They can commiserate when your plot isn’t coming together quite right. They understand the 12-month wait to hear back from a publisher about your manuscript. Whether you’re a business owner, horse enthusiast, student or competitive bicyclist, surrounding yourself with people of the same passion can help recharge you and realign...

confessions: a new venture taking shape

Over the past weekend, I worked on my latest venture: Miller Media Solutions. This business has taken shape over the past year of people asking me for social media consulting, graphic design work and marketing help. For 2013, I’m just giving it a name. This business will be a third alter ego of Nicole Miller (the other two being day job Nicole and writer Nicole.) I’ll post marketing blogs, portfolios of my work and hopefully help a few people with their small business marketing. In creating this website and business model, I’ve had to think far beyond the boundaries of what I normally do. How much is a fair price to me...
