Getting My Ducks in a Row (Literally and Figuratively)

For a split second my ducks were literally in a row. So naturally I took a photo as fast as I could. But apart from my lovely little duckies who, along with 13 chickens, two dogs and one horse, have consumed my spare time, I’ve been working on deliberately and intentionally putting things back in order. Over the past three years, I had immersed myself in a circus of side work on top of my day job. This provided incredible experiences and opened tons of new doors for me, but my intention was to be able to quit the day job and work from home. Instead, I found my dream...

Moments are What We Make of Them

At the Oregon Christian Writer’s conference this past weekend in Eugene, keynoter Jane Kirkpatrick, prolific author and speaker, shared a small side note from her main message that seemed to be the recurring theme for the rest of the day. She asked us to ask ourselves: “What experience do you want to have come out of this day?”  Taking an entire day out of your life to attend a conference is a big deal, she explained. Life is too short and you need to know what it is you expect to get out of the day. If you can articulate it, it’s 90% more likely to come to fruition. This...

Oregon, Ho! Pioneer Nation & Sickness on the Trail

A dear friend asked me a month ago, “You going to Pioneer Nation?” “Say what?” “Chris G’s new conference…” Then she sent me the link: I’d been on the list for World Domination Summit tickets for two years but each time they came up for sale, I didn’t have the spare funds. This time, I had the money — and this was a conference specifically for soloprenuers. This was it. I purchased a ticket within ten minutes of finding the event. The wait for Pioneer Nation to arrive was excruciating. Then, a week out, I caught the nasty cold that was going around. A week out, I thought, would be plenty...

Stepping on Land Mines

Pay particular attention to the scene between 1:24 and 1:35: “I seem to have stepped on a land mine.” “Well why would you go and do something like that?” Isn’t that always the case? Certainly there are times people make choices when they know a minefield may be close. But generally, we don’t choose to step on land mines. Then the people who are not standing on top of an unexploded mine simply ask, “Well, why would you do that?” Sigh. This just seems to be the way it goes. Any yet, I imagine that those people who question stepping on the land mine eventually help poor Matt Damon get...

The Horse Screamer

Some people go by the “horse whispering” theory for horse training and behavior correction. Well, we tried whispering and my little Grunnion wouldn’t exactly listen. Grunnion has been adapting to life boarding at a barn after spending the rest of his life being the king of his own domain at my parent’s house. It’s been a big adjustment and his latest thing has been pushing his pasture mate and people around with his nose. Not violently, per se, but the horse is strong. Really strong. And he’s an Arabian, which means that neck is fairly long and stretchable. Not the safest or best scenario. My husband, who is genuinely amazing...
