Duckies!! They’re so adorable. Seriously. When did those chicks turn in to chickens!? Good question — They sprouted full-chicken feathers and that’s all she wrote. They’re growing into gorgeous hens and I’m so excited to see them blossom (and eventually, lay eggs.) 😉 Oh yes, and the mutts: Loving this crazy, beautiful, animal-filled life!
And then there were ducks…
Our flock continues to grow! Two Khaki ducks: And two Black Indian Runners: Makes four bundles of adorableness: And their favorite thing in the entire world: John and I have basically been watching all evening. These critters are so darn entertaining. Updates on the chicks coming soon!
Chick Chronicles: Five weeks after arrival
Not sure where the past five weeks have gone! The flock has grown exponentially and they’re fully “feathered out.” Icarus still tries to fly the coop (so to speak) nearly every time we take the lid off. She’s got that devious look about her and is one of the largest birds. After putting more brooding sticks in the tank, we perched the feeder across two of them, which became the instant place to hang out. These birds love to be as high as they can. Chick Chronicles: Day 25 – Where did the cuteness go?
The chicks, as they near a month old, are sadly chicks no more. At least it means we’re one month closer to fresh eggs. The molting process is hilarious for some, less painful for others. They are quite the crew and their personalities still shine. Though they still like to peck when you stick your hand in the brooder, they will also hop up on your hand or forearm for a better roosting position. They no longer fit nicely in the palm of your hand — and they have certainly been testing those new wing feathers (though there have been no “successful” escape attempts yet.) Bossy is still the smallest,...
Chick Chronicles: New Digs
As the chicks have nearly tripled in size, we realized the stock tank we purchased would not be big enough for thirteen chicks. So they moved into a 2x2x6 foot stock tank. Now there is plenty of elbow room! (And it’s much easier to get some pictures… which is the important thing, you know.) And then John decided that little Bossy was just the right size for his pocket… And she hung out in his pocket for nearly an hour, snoozing. Silly bird. More chicken mayhem coming soon. The has-been rodeo queen.
