New look, new focus

I’m a chronic “messer-wither” (in my husband’s eloquent wording.) Yes, I mess with things beyond all reason. However, I’ll argue that I had very valid reasons to spruce up my website. First – It needed a better overall theme with more options and more emphasis on content. Ta-da. Enter Elegant Theme’s Chameleon WordPress theme. I wanted a way to make my blog more readable, and also highlight my photography, horses and history research (thus a re-vamped menu up top). (As a person who will freely admit my need for words of affirmation and constructive criticism:) What do you think!?

The secret to success at a writer’s conference

There are hundreds of writer’s blogs. Within each of those blogs, there are a handful of posts that give advice for writers attending a writer’s conference. Honestly, I’ve probably read them all, and if you’re a pre-published author and taking this gig seriously, you probably have too. So I won’t rehash what other bloggers have said (perhaps far more elegantly than I ever could.) At the past Oregon Christian Writer’s Summer Conference, I’d say I had a successful week. There are a thousand ways to measure success, but I am happy that I made connections and friendships that I believe will continue on for some time. I received interest and...

Story Behind the Story: Lynn Squire

How did you come up with the plot and characters for your novel? I was studying the book of Job and developed the plot from it. Since I wanted it to be set in Alberta, I pictured a North West Mounted Police Officer, Sergeant Dixon, and a farmer, Joab Black. Over the course of time, Dixon informed me who he was. Not at all whom I sketched out originally. I didn’t think he’d be so prominent in the book. Then Joab slipped to the background more. His story being Job’s story, he felt that the readers might feel depressed if he played center stage. What inspired you the most...

She often works closely with doctor Paul Anderson, bringing much needed medical services to far-flung people in the forbidding wilderness. But when a new boss who is against women pilots takes over the airfield, Kate’s dreams–and even her life–are at stake. Can she prove her worth? Or will she die trying? And will she ever be able to truly surrender to her growing love for Paul? Full of high-flying adventure and tender personal moments, Wings of Promise is the exciting second book in the Alaskan Skies series. My...

Happy 95th Birthday, National Park Service

I couldn’t resist wishing a Happy Birthday to the National Park Service, which was started on this day in 1916. Preserving more than 400 parks, historical sites and more, the NPS sees more than 275 million visitors a year. (http://www.nps.gov/aboutus/index.htm) I was fortunate to work for the National Park Service for two summers at Fort Vancouver, a fascinating historical site that served as one of the key posts in the settlement of the West Coast. Thousands of pioneers set out to Oregon Country and would stop at the Fort to trade and replenish supplies. The “Father of Oregon,” John McLoughlin (for the record, it is pronounced mac-LOCK-lin) served as Chief...
